THE WIRE IBIZAN HOUND 

Coat
There are two types of coat; both untrimmed. Short-shortest on head and ears and longest at back of the thighs and under the tail. Wire-haired can be from one to three inches in length with a possible generous moustache. There is more hair on the back, back of thighs, and tail. Both types of coat are hard in texture and neither coat is preferable to the other.

General Appearance
The Ibizan's clean-cut lines, large prick ears and light pigment give it a unique appearance. A hunting dog whose quarry is primarily rabbits, this ancient hound was bred for thousands of years with function being of prime importance. Lithe and racy, the Ibizan possesses a deerlike elegance combined with the power of a hunter. Strong, without appearing heavily muscled, the Ibizan is a hound of moderation. With the exception of the ears, he should not appear extreme or exaggerated.

    Pogo came to us at the age of 7 weeks.  Little did we know, he would be a "dog of a lifetime". I have put over 30 AKC Championships on dogs throughout my life and Pogo's was the most exciting. Four of the six judges that finished Pogo went to their judge’s book to see if he was allowed in the ring, with all of his hair.  He finished with 4 majors. The first time we lure coursed him he went Best in Field. Pogo has never been campaigned or handled by anyone but us. Some of his impressive wins include being the only Ibizan to ever win Best In Field at the ASFA International Invitational (over 300 plus hounds) in 2002, and to win BOS at the Eukanuba Finals in 2005 and 2006.  He is a multiply Group Placer and group winner.  Our current goal is for him to receive a Best in Show before he retires. At this date he is the 2nd (#1 is a broken coat) all time winning Wire Coat in the history of the breed and the #1 Hairiest Winning Wire Ibizan in breed History.  It has been said by many breeders, judges and spectators that Pogo demonstrates the movement the AKC breed standard calls for.  Gait: "An efficient, light and graceful single tracking movement.  A suspended trot with joint flexion when viewed from the side. The Ibizan exhibits smooth reach in front with balanced rear drive, giving the appearance of skimming over the ground”.  Pogo’s coat measures up to 3 inches in length on his body while remaining shorter on his legs and muzzles. Pogo's coat has not been trimmed but hand and ”natured” groomed. Pogo's coat is what the Spaniards would refer to as one that goes to field, not one that lies on the couch.

The Ibizan hound is an intelligent dog that requires a lot of exercise and mental stimulation.  Some have the ability to climb over 12 feet fences.  Like many sight hounds, an Ibizan should never be allowed off leash in an insecure area.  Please contact many Ibizan owners to get to know the breed before making the decision to be owned by one.

In the field the Ibizan is as fast as top coursing breeds and without equal in agility, high jumping and broad jumping ability. He is able to spring to great heights from a standstill.
